Pero Wala Ka Na...
I have not been so addicted to a song for God-knows-how-long... until last Saturday.
Being the homebody that I am, I normally spend my rest days just watching TV and lately, local singing contests such as Pinoy Idol and Pinoy Dream Academy occupy my Saturday night viewing habit. Don't get me wrong - I am not the blinded rabid fanatic of either show; I have been sane enough to realize that unfortunately, mediocre performaces have been gracing their episodes for the past months. Still, people watch primarily due to the entertainment value anyway - or simply to kill off boredom.
Daryl Celis is sure one of the weaker contestants in Pinoy Idol (at least vocally) that the judges even dared tell him to just drop his aspirations to be singer and just pursue a career as an actor. But surprise of all surprises, he delivered what I would say the most memorable performance of this season just yet - a ballad version of Pupil's "Nasaan Ka". (watch the clip below)
It was a one-minute-and-a-half of a revelation to me. So moving that it made me realize how beautiful the song actually is. Sung with the right soul and woven into a simple, bare accompaniment, "Nasaan Ka" enfleshes that ambivalent feeling of losing someone: the haunting dreams of the used to be's, the ovebearing questions and regrets, the wishing to relive the kept memories that you know you can never recreate...
When we love, we somehow give ourselves away. And when we lose the people we love, we feel empty for we seem to have lost ourselves too.
But is is also this same loss that breathes and kindles hope. Hope that may lead us to cling on to delusion, to rediscover the beauty of life that we gradually seem to have been blinded to embrace, or simply to dream of a better circumstance for ourselves. Hope that can be so strong and redeeming to regain who we are, make us unbroken and believe yet again.
"Mahahanap din kita...
Kung may langit nga ba, mahahanap din kita."
I deeply wish to do so real soon, may this be hoping against hope. But for the time being, I will just be singing this song, to remind me that this may be a bad place after all.
